My Service in Mill Creek

Mill Creek’s History: A Timeline

Melissa standing in front of the Mill Creek history timeline.

I worked with Mill Creek’s Arts and Beautification committee to develop the new historic panels of the city now on display in the Mill Creek Town Center.

When I was first approached about working on a “Mill Creek Timeline” I was thrilled. I graduated with degrees in  History and Journalism from California State University, Long Beach—majors I chose because of my love of storytelling. While much of my career has focused on communications, I jumped at this chance to dive back into history.

Through this project, I got to interview current and past residents, current and former city council members, and look through newspapers and archival information from the Everett Public Library. I’m proud to have been a part of a project that will be a public good for the community for years to come.

The project was made possible by the tireless efforts of the all-volunteer Mill Creek Arts and Beautification Board and city staff. I hope they continue to pursue projects like this that celebrate our city’s residents.

Park and Recreation Board

This marks my third year as part of the Park & Recreation Board and my first as its Chair. I am very fortunate to be on a board with distinct perspectives when it comes to how we use the city’s parks, trails, and recreation programs. Over these years, I have been a part of the opening of Exploration Park, the updates to Heron Park, and continued maintenance of our Parks and Trails. I have been able to enjoy the wonderful recreational programs and events our city has produced in partnership with the community and Mill Creek’s Youth Advisory Board like Party at the Parks, Eggstravaganza, and Trunk or Treat.

I have also witnessed how the pandemic has changed this department and the services to us as residents. Pre-school Pals, the city’s preschool program, closed and any program that was still able to continue became virtual. It’s been difficult but I appreciate the staff of the city finding ways to continue to engage with users of their programs. As a community, we have the opportunity to share what our needs are for these types of programs, events, and activities and I will be able to facilitate that conversation as part of the City Council.
